Gemma is an author and illustrator from the Causeway Coast. She graduated from Falmouth University in 2011 with a BA (Hons) Degree in Illustration. She also graduated with her first authored and illustrated picture book deal after visiting the Bologna Children’s Book Fair during her final year of study. Her books have now been published globally and been nominated for awards such as the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal, Dundee Picture Book Awards and Coventry Inspiration Book Awards.
She has always had equal love for fine art and design, so illustration presented itself very organically as a career choice. Nature, history and travel have always influenced Gemma’s work too and her Causeway Coast roots have undoubtedly been of huge inspiration in terms of mark making, colour and the natural theme within her work. Her love for trail running, hiking and photography are very much intertwined with her illustration practice too.
Gemma has been broadening her portfolio recently, taking on a wider selection of work alongside working in children’s publishing. She also has her own print business.
Gemma lives in a little cottage next to the woods, near the Mourne Mountains in County Down and works from Blick Studios in the Cathedral Quarter, Belfast.
